Apr 10, 2012 6:04 AM in response to jjwarnementby Limnos,It would help to know to which exact update you are referring. For example, 10.6.7 isn't the latest system update for Snow Leopard which is 10.6.8 v 1.1 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1400 , or do you mean the Java update - Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 7 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1516?
System software updates update general system components. Java updates update Java. Usually an update is specific as to what it is updating.

Apr 10, 2012 6:21 AM in response to jjwarnementby WZZZ,When an OS has finished with point updates (e.g. from 10.6.7 to 10.6.8 as Snow Leopard has), and if that OS is still being supported by Apple, AFAIK, though I may need to be corrected on this, security updates are then provided separately and not included in a then revised Combo update version, which is the all inclusive point updates version of an OS.)
