Usual cause: You're trying to print an image in the wrong aspect ratio: for instance printing an image at 4:3 when the image is actually 3:2 ratio.

How do I know which ratio is being used and how do I change it? I can find no settings for aspect ratio. many thanks

What size is the image? You can find this out in the Info Pane - the length and breadth will be in pixels
What size are you printing at?
1342 x 1336 pixels. Printing at standard. I have found a button - if I control+click on the image in the Customise print window, I can select "Fit Photo to Frame Size". This seems to work. Many thanks

That image is nearly square. To print it borderlessly on any of the standard stock sizes you should first crop it to that size.
That way you'll have control over what gets left out of the photo. Otherwise you will need to selct a paper size that will accept your photo and select the largest square size that will fit on the paper as the print size. This will give you the entire image on the page.
Or select a square size that will leave somewhat of a border around the image.
