Quality of iTunes matched songs vs aiff version of imported cd

I have imported my cd collection at full quality uncompressed using the aiff setting in iTunes. When I do a iTunes match is it temporarily replacing the uncompressed songs with their special compressed version of the song? If I turn off iTunes match do I still have the aiff versions or have they been replaced on my computer with the iTunes matched version?

Thanks for any help

It will either Match them to AAC 256kps versions in iCloud or, if uploaded, it will transcode them to 256kps AAC files to iCloud. So the end result is that your local files are still AIFF, but the iCloud versions are 256kps AAC.

If you subsequently turned off iTM, you should only see the AIFF files again (as long as you never delete them yourself).
