Can the flashback virus effect OS10.5.8 and if so, how can it be fixed?

MacBook (13-inch Late 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.8)

There is way too much misinformation to answer any of that for certainty. If you are running an old operating system, then you do not have most of the newer security updates. Most of those security updates are for things that don't actually exist. However, there are a couple of them that are real.


Flashback is a Java vulnerability. All you need to do is disable support for Java applets. You won't miss them. In Safari > Preferences > Security, turn off "Java". Leave "Javascript" turned on.


Chances are, you don't have any malware. If you are concerned, you can run (in the Terminal):

cat ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist


and then:

ls ~/Library/LaunchAgents


and report the results.
