Q: Red and green square dots?

I only have problems with randomly appearing red or green squares when I launch iPhoto and occasionally when watching video.  A reboot usually fixes it until I launch iPhoto again. Anyone else see this happening?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2010), iOS 5.1

Is anyone else experiencing strange Finder behavior?

Finder has been erractically dysfunctional for me lately. I sometimes get error messages when deleting the trash. I get the beachball when I open folders or drives. Strange.

    Hello Stein,

Yes I have also noticed strange Finder issues.  I am guessing that the pixels, finder delay, etc may be somewhat related to the high memory usage of the 'kernel_task' and 'com.apple.MediaLibraryService' processes.  I don't know if others in this post see a high memory usage from these features but I do (especially considering such a high usage from launch).

Usually when I see the squares or have other graphics issues I will see the Finder lag significantly.  I also recorded several crashes specifically from Finder.  Was also using AppleScript at the time with Finder so was not sure if the two were related.

The beachball could be related to a similar lag on your machine?

    jmf,

Two weeks later, still no red or green squares. New hard drive and dust cleanup may have fixed it.  I'm still not convinced this good performance will continue, however.

I am so glad I found this discussion.  I also have a 2010 iMac that I purchased in 2011 and assuming apple products would live up to their name I didn't purchase apple care.  I am having the same pixel problem and its very random with different applications.. Just did a complete reinstall last night, I am not too positive this will work but it was another attempt at trying to get rid of the pixels and freezing problem.  I think I'll just trade it in for a Mac book...expercom.com has good trade in prices.. They are lemon machines that apple is not taking responsibility for....  We should all email...

    jmf,

Two weeks have gone by and still no sign of those red and green squares. Everything seems to be back to normal. Of course, I don't have much confidence that my good luck will continue...

Even though another on this list changed the drive with other hardware to no avail, I still believe the drive is a suspect. Thanks for the report.

I've had the same problem as everyone else, I've tried a bunch of things to see if it would fix the issue, nothing helped.  When I boot in safe mode I have no problems with the dots and doesn't freeze up at all.  Seems to be a software issue.

Thought I had it fixed permanently. It came back after two months. Not sure why. This problem is so frustrating. I have given apple a chance and I have been burned severly.

    Hi Jack

Yes, I had my hard drive replaced in December. Still have the problem with the squares.

My machine is a Mid 2010 27-inch with a Radeon 5750, running Mavericks. (And I had the squares before Mavericks.)

There is no doubt that this is a manufacturer's defect and that Apple should step up with a solution.

There is little to no common trail regarding this issue. Fodden, have you tried to reduce resolution to "Scaled" 1920 x 1080?

How about Ram? I bought my ram from Crucial.com after I purchased my mac. Any chance that this could be related to faulty ram?

I am going to try and remove my ram and go back to the apple ram that came with my computer. I will comment if I notice any improvements.
