Do you mean the insivishields or case of some sort? I had did have the invisashield which I have on all my smart phones. It's very nice to have. However, I ran into an issue with my keyboard and case. Where it rests in the case, it started to cause bubbles on my invisishield. So, I returned it.

If I didn't have a case and keyboard that messed with it, I would strongly recommend it. Prevents scratches and althought doesn't make is smudge proof, it does cut down on it much.

Necessary? No. And if you walk into an Apple Store, they don't even sell one for iPad. If you take care of your device and keep it in a case (far more necessary, IMHO), a screen protector is not a necessity. When I got my iPad 2, I put Zagg Shield on it. I hated how it made the screen look and feel, so in a matter of days, I took it off. A year later when I sold my iPad 2, there wasn't a single scratch on the screen. I now have the New iPad and haven't even considered putting anything on the screen.

There's no singular answer. I have a zagg screen on my Touch and my iPad. what I like about the iPad is when my niece plays Hungry Fish with her grubby little fingers I can give it a spray of my eyeglass cleaning fluid and wipe them right off without worrying aboout any chemical interaction with the screen's manufactured surface.

I do have a little bubble issue with the keyboard, but it's managable. I also like the bit of glare protection it gives me.

I wouild say if it's where it can get dirty or the such, then can't hurt. If you're a person that just uses it at home on the couch and it never leaves the livingroom, probably not necessary.

I work outdoors in a tough enviornment most days and keep mine in an Otterbox Defender case with a screen protector. Great protection and very appropriate for the conditions I use it in while I'm working in the field. However, I enjoy using my iPad much more on the days when I am in the office and can use it without the case and screen protector. If I worked in my office all the time I would just use one of the folder type cases and no screen protector.

Gerry,

I just bought and tried a product called Liquid Armor based on a recommendation a few days ago. It seem's simple enough to use. You simply wipe it on, let it cure, then buff off your screen with the included micro-fiber cloth. I can tell there is something there but I can't say 100% that it is actually providing "additional" protection. It does not change the appearance of the screen or add any "tackiness" to the screen. The screen looks as good with it on, as with it off. Exactly what I want as I do not want to use a screen cover on my iPhone 5 and iPad. I think that with the gorilla glass they are already very durable and (having been a Zagg user before) I simply want the beauty of my device to show without having something on it. However, being OCD, I just have a hard time leaving my devices "naked". I have nothing to do with these guys but was looking at the posts here on screen protectors due to a new purchase and thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. So, I figure for the $19.95 I paid at CompUSA, it can't hurt either way. There is enough to treat multiple devices more than once so that is a bonus over having to buy a screen protector for each device. Just an alternate consideration to the usual options. I'll post more once I have gone a while with it and see how it works long term.

Hope this helps.
