Interestingly I found 'About Finder' which lists finder version 10.4.7 but am using OSX 10.4.11, does that mean anything unusual?

Finder 10.4.7 for OSX 10.4.11 is normal.

For free space, highlight Macintosh HD on the Desktop, do a Get Info on the whole drive, or sometimes at the bottom of every Finder Window it say space available.

Yes, you'd need more RAM, unfortunately that model will only hold 3-4 GB of RAM, & honestly 10.6 doesn't run very well on so little, but...

You can skip 10.5 but need to buy 10.6 & free upgrade it to 10.6.8, then you can buy Lion using the App Store built into 10.6.6 & above...

If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

A CPU Advisor agrees Memory is upgradable to total of 3GB RAM (with additional 2GB)

possibly up to OS X Lion 10.7.4.

I'm stuck again, starting to upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.5 but have three disks...

1. Mac Box Set Version 10.6.3 (2010) 2Z691-6636-A, or
2. Install DVD Version 10.6 (2009) 2Z691-6428-A, or
3. Install DVD (White) Replacement DVD Not For Resale (2009) SRF2Z691-6558-A (probably when original could not be found for a reinstall).

I believe #1 to be the right one, what do you think? Box label reads Mac OS X v10.6 Retail MC223Z/A. Just don't want to use the wrong one.

Already having another iTunes problem upgrading iPhone 3GS upgrade from 4.0 to iTunes (10.6.3) recommended iOS 5.1.1 b efore OS upgrade to Snow Leopard. iphone seems connected to iTunes but only shows Summary with no capacity, software version or serial number. I "checked for UPdate" which had read new update was available to 5.1. Now reads "Your iPhone software is up to date. iTunes will automatically check for an update on 7/13/12".

Error messages: image on device telling me to connect to iTunes. Can't use iTunes until device has been recovered.

I have been all along. I even changed sync cords and checked all USB connections before restarting. USB Device Tree is showing a possible explanation...

iTunes 10.63 worked fine last night. Now iPhone is unable to be used although it did take a phone message I just couldn't pick up or check message, or calendar, anything.

I thought to just go ahead with the OS update hoping to resolve this other new issue.

It is possible I accidently hit restore? The button is stil live but but "Check for Update" is grayed out.

Any ideas for me?

Many people are happy with older OSs but if you want to update here is my general advice:

To get information about your Mac click the apple (screen top left) and select About this Mac. This will give you your OS number. Then click More Info to see which Processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above as these OSs are for Intel only. You can discover more about various Macs at: http://www.apple-history.com/

The OS numbers and names are:

OS X 10.4.x - Tiger

OS X 10.5.x - Leopard

OS X 10.6.x - Snow Leopard

OS X 10.7.x - Lion

OS X 10.8.x - Mountain Lion

If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that.
