MacBook audio to HDTV

Have MacBook late 2008. Got Moshi Mini DP/HDMI adapter. Did set up and get video but no audio.

Checked Audio (Built in) no HDMI Output or HDMI/Display Port Output listed. How can I get audio on this MacBook?

I was also told by the Mac specialist the adapter would work!! I simply want to watch internet tv from the MacBook on my Samsung HDTV but it seems I have to be an F1 racing engineer to solve a simple problem. Can somebody help and share a simple workaround.

Thanks,

If you connect the MacBook using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo sound system if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.

With the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody there is an adapter that can combine video and audio to HDMI.http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802 &p_id=5969&seq=1&format=2

Frederic, thanks for your quick reply. You got it in one with the 5,1 model. What I'm annoyed with is the Mac guy at the local Best Buy here in Toronto said the Moshi adapter would work for all MacBooks. Obviously not.

Just check the Monoprice adapter link. This adapter then works by sending the video signal thru the Mini DP and the audio thru the USB? If that's correct, what is the sound quality going to be like? I assume straight stereo but no surround capability?

Appreciate your help and advice.

First of all, it's a "Best Buy" guy. Not exactly what I would call "qualified" for answering anything about macs. Second he is correct to a point. Newer machines can pass audio and video through their mini-displayport or thunderbolt ports. So simple mini-displayport to HDMI adapters with audio pass through will work. But if you have a macbook that doesn't pass audio through the video port then you have only the choices mentioned above, i.e., audio out of USB to a HDMI/USB converter or separate analog stereo audio. That's your only choices.

Update:

I did find the following:

Kanex iAdapt MDPHDMIV2 HDMI V2 - Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support

which claims,

X42, that Kanex you showed only works with the Mid 2010 model 7,1,

From wikipedia: On 13 April 2010, Apple added support for audio out using Mini DisplayPort in their MacBook Pro product line. This added feature allows users to easily connect their Macbook Pros to their HDTVs using a cable adapting Mini DisplayPort to HDMI with full audio and video functionality.
