There was some max size for fat16. 2gig max seems familiar to me.

Log in disk utility. It should tell you what the size of the 'drive' is.

The terminal application will give detailed information that you can copy & paste to this thread.

Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal

mac $ diskutil list

... clipped ...

/dev/disk2

#: type name size identifier

0: FDisk_partition_scheme *3.8 GB disk2

1: Apple_HFS Recover 3.8 GB disk2s1

wait for the $ then type diskutil list then press enter.

in my case, I have a '4gig' flash drive listed. 3.8gb is close enough to 4.gig.

mac $ df

Filesystem 512-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on

/dev/disk1s16 569927296 135962488 433452808 24% /

devfs 225 225 0 100% /dev

fdesc 2 2 0 100% /dev

<volfs> 1024 1024 0 100% /.vol

/dev/disk2s1 7913360 5744608 2168752 73% /Volumes/Recover

... clipped ...

another view of my 4gig flash drive is /dev/disk2s1

Post the results fo diskutil list & df here. Thanks.

Try disk utility again. Try formatting again. Did you create multiple partitions?

Be sure to partition the correct dirve. See what disk utility says about the size.

What version of Mac OS are you running?
