Q: iCal on iPad 2 crashes when selecting March 2013

Hi,

I have got a very strange problem with iCal on my iPad 2 Wi-Fi. When selecting March 2013 it instantly crashes iCal, after which I am returned to the springboard. When relaunching iCal it starts with either February 2013 or April 2013 selected. The crashing does not occur in 2012 or 2014, so March 2013 is the only occurance of the crashing found so far.

What have I tried to do to solve the problem:

  • Restart iPad.
  • Force Quit iCal and all other applications.
  • Restart iPad again.

Problem still occured.

  • Disable Calendar syncing from my Google Account.

Problem was gone, iCal was completely empty and working fine.

  • Enable Calendar syncing, but uncheck all calendars in iCal resulting in empty calendar rendered on screen.

Problem still gone.

  • Enabling a single calendar.

Crashing occured again.

My conclusion was that one of my appointments in Google Calendar must contain something that was making iCal crash. However, of the 5 calendars I am syncing with the iPad none of them could be shown without iCal crashing in March 2013. Even public calendars I am subscribed to like official holidays make iCal crash. If something is indeed wrong with an appointment, I would have expected to be able to display the other 4 calendars without problems.

I am syncing the exact same calendars with my iPhone 4 and my iMac, and on both devices no crashing occurs.

Is there anything I can do to extract some more information from my iPad to find out exactly why iCal is crashing?

Just tried going to Month view for March 2013 on the New iPad with the same result, an instant crash with iCal, so it is nothing in your calendar.

Week, day and year view all OK,  As soon as I select Month view iCal crashes.  All I have is iCloud syncing with no other accounts.

You should both consider trying to use multitasking to close all of the apps presently open and execute the task again. I was not able to reciprocate that issue. Also try settings > general > reset > reset all setting. Be sure if given the option you are choosing setup as new. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4211?viewlocale=en_US - multitasking

Have tried everything suggested in all of the threads relating to this problem - nothing has fixed it (incuding your suggestion).  Please can Apple fix this - it is a real problem and more than just a minor inconvenience.

We are all users and not employees of Apple. As long as you can duplicate this problem at any time by trying to go to March 2013, I suggest you make an appointment at the Genius Bar at an Apple Store to see if the problem can be solved.

Yes.. there is certainly a bug in the Ios on ipad to fix..

Same problem here with the new iPad. On the monthview it crashes on march 2013. A colleague of mine has the same problem. I sync with Google calendar and she syncs with hotmail calendar. Another colleague doesn't sync and doesn't have any problems. Seems to me that the problem lies there. Sorry but I don't have a solution yet. I'll keep on searching!

Had the same problem, turns out the problem was I had a contact with a birthday on April 1st. It can be solved either by disabling the birthday calendar or by removing this birthday from the contact.

This is a very strange problem. It is happening to me, too. For me, disabling the Birthday Calendar does not help.

Unbelievable that Apple apparently does not acknowledge this issue although the first reports are from several months ago!

Got any appointments on April 1st? If so, try deleting them.

That helps but is no solution since the "appointment" on 1 April is the Week Number and I don't wish to disable that calendar.

I have the same issue. I have a calendar item on April 1st. When I turn off the calendar that contains this appointment March 2013 doesn't crash ical. With the calendar enabled ical crashes on March 2013.

Think I may have discovered the problem? I can still access March 2013 on my iPad but only when UK Holidays Calander from Google is disabled. It has some weird thing to do with Easter Monday being on the 1st of April. If you delete the holiday from the calander you can access March until your calander refreshes itself and puts Easter Monday back in on April 1st. The only way I can access march for the duration is to disable the holiday calander whilst I'm adding events into the month. Once turned back on March is inaccessible again.  With the calander disabled you can still add other events to April 1st which won't affect March.

Hope this helps, and Apple sort this out before March 2013 comes around!

Same problem. It relates to all day events on Apr1. Delete those and all ok.  Needs a look Apple.
