iCal on iPad 2 crashes when selecting March 2013

Hi,

I have got a very strange problem with iCal on my iPad 2 Wi-Fi. When selecting March 2013 it instantly crashes iCal, after which I am returned to the springboard. When relaunching iCal it starts with either February 2013 or April 2013 selected. The crashing does not occur in 2012 or 2014, so March 2013 is the only occurance of the crashing found so far.

What have I tried to do to solve the problem:

  • Restart iPad.
  • Force Quit iCal and all other applications.
  • Restart iPad again.

Problem still occured.

Disable Calendar syncing from my Google Account.

Problem was gone, iCal was completely empty and working fine.

Enable Calendar syncing, but uncheck all calendars in iCal resulting in empty calendar rendered on screen.

Problem still gone.

Enabling a single calendar.

Crashing occured again.

My conclusion was that one of my appointments in Google Calendar must contain something that was making iCal crash. However, of the 5 calendars I am syncing with the iPad none of them could be shown without iCal crashing in March 2013. Even public calendars I am subscribed to like official holidays make iCal crash. If something is indeed wrong with an appointment, I would have expected to be able to display the other 4 calendars without problems.

I am syncing the exact same calendars with my iPhone 4 and my iMac, and on both devices no crashing occurs.

Is there anything I can do to extract some more information from my iPad to find out exactly why iCal is crashing?

Called yetserday the German support hotline - the Girl at the end of the line was not aware of the problem 😕.

Her recommendation was to reset the iPad and configure is as a new iPad. As I'm a nice guy I give it a try - expecting that this will not solve the isssue... but OK.

As long as there was no all day entry on April 1st month view worked fine. After entering an all day appointment on April 1st the problem was there again - q.e.d.

Today I called again the support hotline and the girl was a little bit more knowledgeable and gave me the tip which is already discussed here in the forum - change all day events on April 1st to timed events....

Well, as April 1st is Easter Monday my company has this as an all day event in our company holiday calender and so I'm not able to change it - after the next sync there is again the all day event and the calender crashes.

The girl tried to calm me down with the information that Apple technicians working on this bug....but hey they working on it since months 😠... I assume that they will not fix it as March will be over in 12 weeks and according to the girl from the hotline many users are happy with the workaround 😢

So - if you call the hotline with this porblem please save your time and do not reset your iPad. This will not solve the issue - change all day events to timed events, use an other calendar app or buy a Samsung tablet runing with Android....

Just discovered I have this problem, can not change all day events on the 1st April as 3 of them are subscribed calendars which I need and the 4th is my wedding anniversary (why should I have to change them, and what about all the people born on the 1st of April) simply deleting/changing these events is not a fix for lots of us. Maybe since apple don't seem to care about our March maybe we should boycott them for that month unless they solve the problem. They have been going downhill in my opinion since apple maps anyway.

You can view it in week view if you don't want to/can't change events on 1st April, which is what I'm doing (but I'm not happy about it) at the moment there is no real fix, hopefully as march descends upon us more people will start to notice and apple will be forced to fix it. Maybe the Mayans got their calander slightly wrong and the world is goin to end in march this year instead. AKB (apple know best!)

Yup, the problem is alive and well (or not well) on iPad 3 as well. The work-around approach taken by Apple (delete all-day entries on April 1st and you'll be fine) sounds to me like a lame April Fools' Day joke. Especially since this problem has been around for months. Apple is obviously sitting this one out (after all, March will be long gone in a few weeks). But what does that say about programming ethics at the company? Better late than never, guys. Admit the problem and get it fixed! You're driving customers away!! Remember the mobile connection problem on the "new" iPad which Apple also denied for weeks and weeks and still hasn't been fixed in all parts of the world? It's giving the other tablets a good boost.
