Q: iCal on iPad 2 crashes when selecting March 2013

Hi,

I have got a very strange problem with iCal on my iPad 2 Wi-Fi. When selecting March 2013 it instantly crashes iCal, after which I am returned to the springboard. When relaunching iCal it starts with either February 2013 or April 2013 selected. The crashing does not occur in 2012 or 2014, so March 2013 is the only occurance of the crashing found so far.

What have I tried to do to solve the problem:

  • Restart iPad.
  • Force Quit iCal and all other applications.
  • Restart iPad again.

Problem still occured.

  • Disable Calendar syncing from my Google Account.

Problem was gone, iCal was completely empty and working fine.

  • Enable Calendar syncing, but uncheck all calendars in iCal resulting in empty calendar rendered on screen.

Problem still gone.

  • Enabling a single calendar.

Crashing occured again.

My conclusion was that one of my appointments in Google Calendar must contain something that was making iCal crash. However, of the 5 calendars I am syncing with the iPad none of them could be shown without iCal crashing in March 2013. Even public calendars I am subscribed to like official holidays make iCal crash. If something is indeed wrong with an appointment, I would have expected to be able to display the other 4 calendars without problems.

I am syncing the exact same calendars with my iPhone 4 and my iMac, and on both devices no crashing occurs.

Is there anything I can do to extract some more information from my iPad to find out exactly why iCal is crashing?

I presume you mean having deleted 1st April and not 1st March as you said. The bug is on 1st April only

    Well...

As some of you might have mentioned before: Reading and understanding are quite different things altogether. I really glitched that one. Changing April works.

Hope I dont forget to change back my friends birthday afterwards.

    cheers.

I had the same problem as everyone  and solved following the solution of King Penguin : "You don't need to remove any events, you just need to change any events on 1st April to be timed events (e.g. starting at 4 am) instead of being 'all day' events (I think that the problem is due to daylight saving on 31st March) - so if you sync them from somewhere then change them on that, if you don't sync then go into list view and change them".

    Hope this helps.

Unfortunately this does not solve the problem for calendars you subscribe to. For example I subscribe to a jewish festivals calendar which has weekly entries for the sabbath and lost more for festivals. Sabbath days and festival days are all day events. As a subsribed calendar I have no control over the calendar and cannot amend times or days or delete individual events or add events to it. Of course this is a correct control as it is up the maker of the calendar to get dates and times correct thats why people like me subscribe to it. I have emailed the maker of the jewish calendar but have not had a reply. They ideally need to change the event on 1st April to a timed event rather than whole day event as you rightly suggest.

This can also be solved by going into settings, calendar settings and then selecting a different time zone. I managed to get my ipad stuck on march 2013, so I couldn't open the calendar anymore as it instantly crashed. Changing the time zone meant I could go back into the calendar and remove the all day events in April and then put the correct London time zone back.

Oh heck - I have just subscribed to the UK Holidays calendar - big mistake!!  Cannot now delete or amend the entries for the 1st April (Easter Monday etc.) hence iCal Crashes when selecting March.   However, I changed the time zone to Panama and it solved the problem.   Paris France did NOT solve the problem so it is something to do with time zones around the GMT zone. Anyone any other ideas?  Maybe APPLE MIGHT HAVE AN IDEA??? Oh is that a PIG I see in the sky??!?!

Everyone concerned with this and other Apple issues should know that Apple do not read these forums, which exist only as a means of communication between users. If you want a chance to have someone at Apple read about your concerns, leave comments on the Feedback portion of the Apple site.

I too agree that it is unacceptable that Apple have not fixed this issue, but this medium is not the place to change anything. Another suggestion is to mention it to an Apple technician if you have cause to speak to one whilst obtaining technical support etc. - they often pass user suggestions up the line.

I agree with Dr Z. However I have already raised this with Apple direct on two occasions on two different media to no avail.

How die rikkirog delete the UK public hols from iCal? i dont seem to be able to do it on the iPad.

I agree with Dr Z and Oldmoondog1: Apple does not read these posts. So, why don't we all make sites like MacRumours and AllthingsD aware of the problem using Twitter?

A new iOS version (6.1?) is in development. And should available soon.

Does someone know if this bug is solved in it?

I have found one workround for those with holidays calendars that are impossible to delete.  I changed the time zone to Freetown Sierra Leone - and bingo it worked.  i beleive they are in the same time zone as London, but for some reason London time zone seems to crash the 1 April issues.

Hope this helps those in London time zone.
