verifying ipod

Hi

I am running iTunes 10.6 on a PC with a Windows 7 OS.

Until this weekend my iPod Classic (160G) contianing about 22,000 songs worked perfectly. Having added just two album's worth of songs to iTunes my iPod will no longer sync, with the message "Verifying iPod" continually displayed. This remains for around an hour at which point I get the message "iTunes has stopped working".

I have tried a repair of iTunes, a re-install of iTunes a reset of the iPod all to no avail... and at the same time my daughters' iPhone continues to sync perfectly...

I have seen a number of discussions elsewhere, but not seen a definitive reply....

Any help?

Much appreciated.... thanks!

Please do the iPod Disk Diagnostic, refer to this post by tt2

It wont fix your problem but will help in trouble shooting.

Hopefully only the Pending Sector are slightly high, which maybe reset by Restore.

Have a nice day!

Ok.... so I ran the diagnostic which led me to the conclusion my iPod was on its last legs. Bought a new one, and joy of joys a perfect snyc first time.

HOWEVER, after only 3 syncs of the new one, having added at the most around 200 songs iTunes cannot verify the Ipod before it stops working...... 20 minutes of waiting....... and no new music added to the device. Partners iPhone, and daughters IPhone sync perfectly.

I have reinstalled iTunes, run a diagnostic and even called in the Apple Store, who say they have never heard of this problem!

Come on Apple... what is causing this fundamently problem?!

Did the Disk Diagnostic on the new iPod look good? if not bring it in and insist on a replacement with a new iPod and not a refurbished iPod.

If the DD looks good, then other probable causes

  1. Corrupted iPod filesystem - right click on the iPod icon in Win Explorer ->Properties->Tools->Error checking
  2. Some Windows Apps or plugins that is in conflict with iTunes, especially monitoring software like Antivirus. Stop them, but disconnect from Internet first before you stop any Antivirus.
  3. Connecting via a slow USB port or USB Hub. _ Connect to the USB Port at the Back of the PC.

Thanks Bilbo. Very helpful things to try.

Right - the disc dianostic looked fine. So followed your other instructions.

1. Checked for errors - no errors found on disc.

2. Turned off Kaspersky........ did not help.

3. Tried in all four USB slots at the rear of the computer..... nothing.

It does seem as though it is an iTunes issue, as even when not updating the iPod, ITunes seems to crash periodically with the message "iTunes has stopped working" displayed on the screen. I have tried a rerpair and a re-install and iPod just carrys on Verifying with nothing added to it in terms of music or playlists.

This is now becoming very frustrating (probably more for my other half who is getting annoyed at me getting annoyed!)

I've had the same issue. I followed instructions I read in a form to uninstall all Apple related programs (ITunes, Quicktime, Bonjour etc), restarted my computer deleted iTunes folder, iPod folder etc etc et al (all of my iTunes files and music are on an external hard drive). Reinstalled iTunes, added all of my songs and files back to iTunes from the external hard drive and the same **** crap "do you want to san and fix..." "Windows can't check the drive while it is in use.." "Schedule disk check" and it sits stuck on "Verifying _________ 's iPod" until I finally get ****** off and unplug it, it then cycles through without adding anything new. I've left it on "Verifying____" over night and came back the next morning and it was still "verifying". Help!

I eventually resorted to a full restore before removing iTunes and reinstalling version 6 (I think). This worked, although you need to reimport your Library as earlier versions of iTunes cannot read later libraries. It worked but took best part of a weekend. The problem is people posting on here make it sound simple... and it wasnt! If you do then all your playlists will be gone.

Like you my tunes are on an external drive.

However, my daughter then updated to the latest version of iTunes and it is still working.

I have however noticed some things. I have two iPods... if I fill the older one up it gets stuck on verifying... if I only copy selected playlists I have no problem whatsover. My newer iPod will stick on verifying after undertaking sync of the old one (and always displays the "scan and fix message", to which I press "continue without scanning". However it does sync... eventually. Having read up on this, it seems it is an issue which starts to occur as the iPod gets older.

There appears to be no generic fix for this and Apple are being very quiet.
