Thanks for the links! I think I knwo the answer, but I have never backed up my phone, and the laptop I used to connect to (for iTunes) is no longer available to me..... The apple logo started flashing last night and I couldnt get it switched back on. I am led to believe i have to restore it... but that means losing all my data as i have no back up to go back too 😟

Unfortunately, that's what will happen. It's never wise not to maintain a backup of important data. With no backup, there is no way to recover your data, sorry.
Thanks for your help! I thought as much, only got myself to blame
You're welcome.
If I may I would like to ask a supplementry question on iCloud backups.
If I do an iCloud backup then on the next few occasions revert to backing up using iTunes on a PC, will the backup in iCloud remain or will it be deleted by me selecting to use iTunes?
Personally I would prefer to backup using iTunes but it would be good to have a backup (albeit an earlier one) in iclous to restore from should any catastrphe befall the PC. I have asked this question a few times but have never got a definitive answer.
Thanks
Good question, but I don't have a definitively answer. However, easy for you to find out yourself, just backup to iCloud, then turn such off. Login to iCloud.com & view storage used. It should match the size shown on your phone when you did the backup. If it does, you have your answer.
Thank you. It appears that the answer is Yes.
I connected my 3gs and backed it up using iCloud then checked the storage from my iPhone 4 and it showed 24.5MB as being the 3gs storage. Then turned off the 3gs backup to iCloud option and got the warning that it would now sync to iTunes through a computer. Checked the storage again from my iPhone 4 and the same 24.5MB for the 3gs is still there.
Thanks for your help.🙂
You're welcome.
