Mac Mini AppleHDADriver Crash and Kernel NOT finding directories

I have a mid 2010 mac mini, still under Applecare. I have been dealing with Apple support for 7 months now and cannot get a resolution to the problem other then their telling me it is software, not hardware.

I consistently get errors indicating the AppleHDADriver crashes and goes to an error handler. This happens 100's of times a second. Along with this error I get an error stating the kernel is unable to find a directory. Both these errors show up in the console log under 'kernel errors' and happen daily.

The result of the problem seems to be the status bar/system clock freezes and doesn't update. The clock freeze occurs mainly when coming out of sleep, but has also happened durning full operation of the machine.

It seems no matter what software I install, or what vendor it is from or even what the software is used for, something crashes, the system slows down and freezes... It was two days ago the system started with an unresponsive mouse.

Any ideas he would be great... I am tired of trying to get the Apple 'senior advisor' to truly talk solutions. I lost 100's of hours when this problem first occurred as it started with Snow Leopard. When doing a clean install of Lion as directed by Apple support it was discovered the old time machine files were corrupt and couldn't be used to restore...

Those errors in the kernel have been there from the beginning... Across Snow Leopard, Snow Leopard clean install, Lion upgrade, Lion clean install and still those kernel errors are there consistent. This should indicate a hardware problem someplace and not software...

Sound more like a Hardware issue to me, like RAM or Logic Board.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Okay, I tried what you suggested and the list of information I found is shown below....

There is one set of ACL's it appears are not being repaired, they are on Apache files which I changed when I configured Apache so I could edit the files for configuration.

This error appears only when doing a full start:

Apr 11 19:11:16 doa kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 == fAudioEngineArray" failed in AppleHDADriver at line 4490 goto Exit

Here is the information from the runs I did repairing permissions on the drive...

Not sure what it all means, but clearly there were some persmission problems on the drive which were fixed and haven't appeared again as of yet.

Any clues on where to go next?

Oops, a little more information...

Startup Items: iTunesHelper, Yahoo! Widgets and Dropbox

Third Party: Adobe Version Cue CS4, Akamai, Flash Player, Logitech Control Center and MySQL.

The AppleHDADriver errors were found in the kernel log...

These same pieces of software run on my iMac at work without any problems, a friends Mac Mini, my previous Mac Book Pro... Actually on several mac's at work all without error, problems lockups or any other ill effects. Only seems to occur on this mini.

I didn't notice any errors where the kernel wasn't finding a directory, but right now I don't know how often that occurred in the past. I will run it and see what happens as time goes on and check permission problems as more time goes by and see what changes.

Presently I am making sure to start only Apple software, other then the startup items.

Thanks for your help.

Apr 11, 2012 7:48 PM in response to BDAqua

There are no sound devices connected, either before this problem or after. Not even speakers...

Adobe Sound Booth was installed as part of CS4. I removed that about two weeks ago under the direction of Apple. Other than that the only software I have which may use sound is iTunes, iLife products and FinalCut Express. None of which have I used on this mini.

Primary software I run are Adobe products, Flash Builder, Dreamweaver and Photoshop; some database management tools and a news reader... Browsers... I am a programmer by trade hench why all the programming tools.

These occur several times a second... The IOSurface seems to happen on a regular basis. All are from kernel.log file.

Apr 11, 2012 9:30 PM in response to andyallor

OK, that indicates a Disk problem, but I still think it's HW problem, since we checked all of that & in Safe Mode which is far less demanding it works...

I started the memory test tonight, I will post results as soon as they are completed. If everything is okay there, I will try the repair disk as you pointed out in the other link and see what that comes back with for results... I did notice in the logs the AppleHDADriver errors appear everytime the machine is booted or brought out of sleep. There were also this one additional kernel error, which I am not sure what it means.

Apr 12, 2012 9:25 PM in response to andyallor

Here is a thread of several (7 pages) worth of people having errors HFS: Very Low Disk: 0 freeblks, dangerlimit: 10

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3216687?start=0&tstart=0

The first round of memory test came back, passing all tests... As you said, this doesn't completely rule out memory problems, but it reduces those odds... The memory is 8 GB on my mini and was purchased from OWC with a lifetime warranty.

Thanks again..

Apr 13, 2012 5:24 AM in response to BDAqua

This mini orginally came with Snow Leopard. With Applecare I have done a clean install of Snow Leopard, upgraded to Lion, a clean install of Lion, attempted repair of Lion, in every instance this problem has returned.

The last thing I heard from the senior advisor for a solution.... Well here is a copy of part of the email...

When you insist on having so many third party applications running it makes it hard for me to help you.

You haven't been willing to do what I know will resolve your issues

I don't know what Navicat is, but it's causing problems. (Navicat is a SQLite database manager)

1. install just Apple software on you computer,

we can do this by creating a second, blank partition without removing everything from your current partition

2. test with only the operating system with all of it's updates.

3. after we have a blank OS we can start adding the third party software 1 Application at a time.

if you do this I think we will find that your computer doesn't have any issues associated with Apple software/hardware.

Now, to give a little more insight... Errors such as they are talking about have been shown in the general log file from Adobe Sound Booth, Flash Builder, Navicat, MTNewsWatcher, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and some others I don't remember off the top of my head.

To me with so many different software failures appearing from different vendors and distinct different uses, this is further indication hardware is causing a software issue. The thread I posted above with 7 pages of similar problems listed even several other software generating problems including Flash, Safari, Chorme, iTunes... Again support hardware casuing issues with software, not software issues with hardware.

Every communication I have with them talking and asking about kernel.log errors there is nothing responded regarding the kernel errors you are seeing me post in this thread; always it comes back to software being the issue.

I am a web programmer by trade, been around computers even back when Jobs, and Gates were but wee lads starting out... I have other macs, iMac, my previous MacBook Pro, several iMacs at the college I work for, all running this same software or one version newer on different OS X, Snow Leopard and Lion and even Leopard when it iwas out... NONE of them even have a kernel.log file generated futher indicating this is hardware and now software...

The second memory test passed...

I cannot express my appreication enough for all the input you have given...

Apr 13, 2012 11:23 AM in response to andyallor

OK, after rereading that 7 pages... it seems the major consensus is that it's a Graphic card/graphic driver thing.

An interesting test would be to put this Mini in FW Target mode, and boot another Mac off the Mini that is a simple FW Drive in target mode, & see if a Mac with a different graphic card gets those HFS: Very Low Disk: freeblks errors, but what HFS & graphics have in common is anybody's guess.
