IMAC Intel G5 and Apple Network and Quark Express

We're finding that Quark Express 6.5 is behaving really poorly at opening, recognizing files on our Apple office network. Not sure if the problem is Quark and the new IMAC, or the new IMAC and AFP service on OS X server.

We have not upgraded OS X server to 10.4.5 because the 10.4.4 update broke some things (PhP talking to MySQL) that cost time and money to troubleshoot and repair.

The G5 Imac is running 10.5.5 which we just installed today.

I'm confused. Did you buy a new iMac Core Duo (Intel) or the iMac G5?

If you bought the iMac Core Duo, then Quark Express 6.5 will run under rosetta, which will exact a performance penalty resulting in slow launches and overall slowness when compared to running it on a G5 machine. This is because Quark Express 6.5 was not written for the new Intel-based Macintoshes.

I could have written this better, sorry. Yes it is a Core Duo. And the problem is Quark accessing our office network. While there probably is some performance penalty with Quark on the Intel, the G5 is still faster than what we were using.

The issue is that it hangs trying to work with documents which reside on our Apple AFP network. It especially hangs when trying to Get Picture.

On the AFP server log, I can see the Core Duo machine demanding up to 80% of the server's processor capacity and yet accomplishing nothing.

So, the question is, are we experiencing a problem between the apparently new AFP2 standard of the CoreDuo Intel and our existing G4AFP standard?

Are we seeing some problem related to Quark and AFP networking?

Quark performs just fine on this machine when everything it needs is relocated to its own local hard drive. It does not like our AFP network.

I have seen another comment on this Board where someone with In Design from Adobe and a Core Duo Imac is having issues where files on their network will not launch unless they rename them. Also sounds like an AFP issue of some kind.

We upgraded to 10.4.5 immediately on installing the machine (it's that new) so we have no reference for whether the problem is just related to 10.4.5

Our business model, like many design firms, is that work remains on the office network where it is accessible to all and immediately backed up. So, this problem is hurting, not helping, our workflow.

There appears to be an issue with connecting to a network with the Intel machines if the network has VoIP enabled. Large companies and corporate networks are likely to have this issue. Network access is spotty and inconsistent, it will run fine for a while then hang, start up and stop randomly. It appears to be a issue specifically with ethernet.

I have managed a temporary workaround by sharing my internet connection on a G5 out to firewire, then attaching the Intel iMac via Firewire to the G5, enable Built-in Firewire in Network Port Configuration, and the network issues dissapear. You will need to connect to your server using the Connect to Server meu and entering in the IP address, since you are no longer on the same subnet.

Interesting catch. We did just enable Vonage VOIP on our Ethernet LAN.

I thought I would also add that our temporary fix is to use the Intel Duo Core as the file sharing server and that seems to work fine. We do not experience Quark network problems when accessing the Intel Duo Core from other office machines, only the other way around. Quark will not perform reliably on network issues such as Get Picture (import picture) from the Duo Core (local workstation) to a standard G4 Mac running OSX Server 10.4.5 (Network).

Maybe this tidbit will click with someone, too.
