No one knows. No one had ever heard of them before this.
Apple will be posting a removal tool soon.
The Java update prevents new infestations, but does not remove an existing infestation.

There are various scripts around that detect an infection, and Apple is working on an update per a recent posting.
Apple does include an embedded anti-malware tool known as XProtect within OS X.
I don't see a particular reason to install anti-malware tools for OS X, but then I also prefer follow specific practices around system and network security. That includes disabling Java in the web browsers, and removing Adobe Flash Player, and some specific practices around downloads and web links.
