I am trying to import backup files from a storage drive into my mac. What is the trick to doing this?

I stored the data from an XP machine onto a portable hard drive. Then the XP machine got a virus a week later and I was not able to connect to the new mac. I am trying to read from a backup file off the now defunct XP machine.
I don't think it can be done on a Mac, unless it's an IntelMac & you use like Parallels...

Did you wiped your PC HDD ?
