Does the iCloud password need to be an email address?

My Apple ID is not an email address, it's one word, but iCloud insists that to log in to iCloud I must enter my Apple ID which needs to be an email address.

I tried entering the email address associated with my Apple ID but iCloud would not accept this, any ideas?

Can't find any info that states that an Apple ID should be an email address anywhere else.
