How do I format my SanDisk Cruzer Blade to play movies on iPad2?

What is the exact procedure, in simple terms, to format my SanDisk Cruzer Blade 32GB USB flash drive to FAT32 so I can connect it to my iPad2 with the iPad Camera Connection Kit, which I have purchased? I want to be able to put movies on the flash drive to save space and play them on my iPad2.

Also, I assume the file type I will need to convert movies to is .MOV - can anyone tell me the best screen size / resolution to achieve full screen video on iPad2?

Thanks in advance to whoever can help!

For the DCIM directory, just create it as you would a 'normal' directory - it's the name of it that's important.

.MOV films are supported - the supported formats are listed on this page i.e.

Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

You will need to copy the film to the iPad in order to play it, you won't be able to play it from the flash drive. On iOS4 (I haven't tried it with iOS 5.1) I have managed to copy an MP4 film via an SD card with the kit and been able to watch it in the Photos app, but a film bought from iTunes didn't play (you can't copy content to the Videos app via the kit). Also the kit only recognises content that is in a particular format - the card has to have a DCIM directory off its root, with the photos/videos underneath it with filenames exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus file extension.

Depending on the flash drive you may also need a powered hub for it to be recognised - a lot of them require more power than is supplied to the kit.

In addition to what Penguin said, theoretically you can use an external drive or card and the camera connection kit to import videos. It's not flawless. It's not something that's supported by Apple rather something that works. So you have to find and make the workaround.

YOu have to follow the naming convention as he said, and there are issues with USB drives triggering the 'too much power' warning. I had 4 drives and had success with 2 of them. Any flash drive with a large LED or with bundled software - like the sandisk - wont' work. You might get the sandisk to work, but you need to format it to get rid of their software.

You could have more success with SD cards. I've been able to import files off 32 gig SD and CF cards.

But like they said, you don't watch it off the card, you import it into iPhoto, watch it, delete it.

Ok thanks for all the info King_Penguin & Skydiver119. It seems I misunderstood what I read on various forums on the net. So basically the flash drive is to store the movies which I then import onto the iPad as and when I want to watch each movie rather than play them from the flash drive. I am happy to follow the file naming format and as the USB flash has no LED but does have software installed, I am happy to try to erase / format the flash drive to see if it works. The flash drive I have is this one - http://www.sandisk.co.uk/about-sandisk/media-kit/retail-product-photos/usb-flash -drives/sandisk-cruzer-blade

Do you know how I format it to have a DCIM directory like a camera memory card?

Am I right in assuming files should be .MOV format? Im planning to rip a few dvd's so will be converting these myself rather than buy on iTunes.

You're going to be using a computer to get these files onto the drive. So just make a folder called DCIM on the top level. And put your movies into it.

I use MP4 files for my movies. Look into Handbrake. it even has an ipod and I think iPad preset and does a good job converting files.

The only other thing that seems to work is a drive called Seagate GoFlex. It makes its own wifi hotspot that you can connect to and stream movies from. Doesn't hve the best reviews but does seem to work.
