Apple ID request - real or fake
Is this a valid email from Apple: appleid@id.apple.com? I'm worried that I was asked to tweak my ID account by some hacker. I was prompted on my iPad when downloading an app for my kid before coffee!
iOS 5.1

That is an address that Apple uses.
What's in the content of the email you recieved?
Matt
If the email included a link to your account, be suspicious. If not, it is most likely legit and you should access your account from iTunes to follow up.
If you are still uncertain, contact AppleID support.
It asked me to confirm a rescue email address that I had added with new security questions. That request itself felt random. But perhaps it was due to the app I was requesting being a kids' one and it wanted to be sure the adult was OK'ing it?
Unless it was triggered by something you did (for example unlocking a locked Apple ID) you may want to consider resetting your password.
Matt
Haven't heard of that before. Personally, I would log into the Apple account (NOT from any link in the email) and see if there is any on the account page that goes along with this, and/or contact Apple support about it. May be a legit request, but sounds odd to me. Maybe someone else has encountered it.

Absolutely.

Yes. I've recieved legit emails from that address.
Matt
The displayed address may be legit, but address headers can be faked.

Indeed, that is true.
I'm just saying that, based on the email address alone, it's impossible to say.
