Hp scanner 4000 series not working since downloading Lion. I downloaded the driver, but it does not work. Received instruction to uninstall scanner, but cannnot do that since it is "grayed" out. HP support did not help. Anyone have any ideas?

Open System Information and check that the scanner appears under one of the USB busses in the Hardware section.
If the Mac does show the scanner as being physically connected then open Image Capture. Does the scanner appear here and when selected, commence an overview of an image placed on the scanner?

What kind of 4000 series is it? The OfficeJet, DesignJet, and LaserJet are shown on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669 as supporting printing only.
It is an HP Scanjet 4370, a flatbed scanner. I have an Hp Laserjet printer and that is working, thank goodness.

I tried that and the instructions state to uninstall the scanner first - I can not do that because the scanner is not listed in the Uninstall folder and the scanner is grayed out.
I tried putting the scanner files in the trash, but trash will not delete it
