just upgrade to lion and now i cannot open office 2004. now what?

Restore your previous OS from the bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup you made. Lion's been out for almost a year and there's been much traffic on the fact that PPC apps won't run in it.
I was under the impression that Office:2004 was already Universal Binary, apparently not. Or maybe your installation was shaved of its Intel code? I remember some people went with the misguided idea of "saving" a few disk bytes by deleting the unused half of the universal binary apps.

Office 2004 is not compatible with OS X Lion. 😐
You can upgrade to Office 2011 or use the free LibreOffice. Compatible with all major competitors' file formats. You can easily import files from Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and many other formats, and can easily save to Microsoft Office and other formats when needed.
Office '04 is a PPC suite.
