iMac White screen question Mark, won't respond!

Hi, my iMac 20" is giving me white screen with the question Mark folder, some smack head formatted it and now it won't respond to the install disk, it won't even beep on a pram reset and there's no chime? Please help!!!!

You may be able to recover your data if you put the drive in an external drive enclosure. There is not guarentees however.


The option key boot of the dvd should work even with a bad harddrive. ( I'd think in most instances. )


Try holding down the option key then power on. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your hd/cd/dvd. Click on right arrow key.

There was a password set on the mac, it wouldn't let me do anything, so we removed the hard drive (it was fine) and put it in another without the password protection on loaded osx and put it back in my iMac, the pasword is still present on the logic board but will only effect the re installing of mac nothing else.. Winner

This maybe the firmware password. I haven't played around with a firmware password.


Shouldn't you be getting a promote with a key to enter your firmware password? A firmware password will prevent you from doing a lot of things to do with booting.

This seems to me more like the firmware password. You can tell by looking in this Apple article to see if you get the firmware Icon.
