Apple DVD player and cinema display - how to get a full screen picture

I am trying to watch a DVD using cinema display. Every time I attempt to select view in full screen, the picture slides across back to the laptop. I can use 'fit to screen' but that is not ideal, and not as good as fully screen (it has borders around it).

Has anyone encountered this problem and have any suggestions?

I'm using a 2011 MacBook Pro, running iOS 10.7.1 (it's brand new as of last week). The cinema display is pre-thunderbolt.

Try playing the DVD with VLC

In its "Video" menu, use "Fullscreen Device" to select the display.

Well, I started off using VLC, because that is what I had always used on my old MacBook. But for a reason I don't understand, I couldn't select the movie to play - all i got was the opening sequence playing over and over - I couldn't select any options, trailer, movie etc.

So don't know why VLC is not working ...

Probably you were originally using vlc 1.1.12 and they have since come out with vlc 2.? and basically ruined it. They change the interface and perhaps preferences too so you may have to sift through them to iron the problems out (assuming it doesn't crash on you, does that too now occasionally). Use 1.1.12 if you still have it.

There do seem to be issues with the new update to VLC, and I can't seem to get them sorted - having looked at the users' forum on their website. I will persevere.

But in the meantime, does anyone have an answer to the original question - whether I can get full screen on my cinema display, using Apple's DVD player?

DVD player defaults to the primary display. I don't believe you can change it to the secondary display, however you can change which display is the primary one.

To do this open up preferances > displays. Under the arangement tab it shows the position of the two displays and the primary display has a white bar at the top. Click the white bar, hold it for a second or two and then drag it onto the display you wish to become the primary.

Then DVD player will default to the selected primary screen when using full-screen mode.
