FLASHBACK, FLASHBACK, FLASHBACK: get yer patch while hot!

Ok, boys & girls, time to put the Flashback in the grave. Java Patch 2012-003 is out, meant to be a Flashback killer. Install NOW.

This Java security update removes the most common

variants of the Flashback malware. This update also configures the Java web plug-in to

disable the automatic execution of Java applets. Users

may re-enable automatic execution of Java applets using

the Java Preferences application. If the Java web plug-in

detects that no applets have been run for an extended

period of time it will again disable Java applets. This update is recommended for all Mac users with Java installed. For details about this update see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5242

i downloaded the update, how do you run it?

I dont see an app.

Thanks.

If you downloaded the standalone update directly from Apple's support pages, you will have a file called JavaForOSX.dmg if on Lion, or JavaForMacOSX10.6.dmg if on Snow Leopard in your browser's download directory. Look for it. Double click, and it will verify and open the disk image, mounting it on your desktop; a Finder window will open showing a .pkg file:

User uploaded file

Double click, and the Installer will come up, leading you thru the installation steps.

OR

Simply run Software Update in System Preferences, select Java Update 2012-003 if on Lion, Java for MacOS X 10.6 Update 8 if on Snow Leopard and let the installer do all of the above automatically.

found it in system pref, but cannot run it.

What exactly did you find in System Preferences?

This is a software update, not an application or preference. When you install the update, it both patches Java to remove the vulnerability the malware exploits & automatically scans for & removes the most common variants of it.

You won't see any notice about the scan unless it detects the malware. From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5247:

Description: This update runs a malware removal tool that will remove the most common variants of the Flashback malware. If the Flashback malware is found, it presents a dialog notifying the user that malware was removed. There is no indication to the user if malware is not found.
