Sometimes I can send mail and sometimes I cant. When I can't I sometimes get the 'problem with outgoing server address' message, but the address is correct. Sometimes test messages sent by me to me go into the Important mailbox but not into the Inbox.Messages that have failed send end up copied several times in a folder called Bin. Any ideas?

Oh, is it POP or IMAP?
It says it's Imap but the Mac Support guy thought it should say Pop. It's worked for years saying Imap.

Incoming mail server: imap4.blueyonder.co.uk
Username: <account username>
Password: <your account password>
Note: the username is the original username for your account not an alias that you might have setup.
For the Outgoing mail:
Outgoing Mail server (SMTP) settings
Server Name: smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
*Advanced Settings*
Port: uses default port setting
Authentication: None
Nearly.
The server name is smtp.blueyonder.co.uk:(my username)
The Advanced Settings are Port 143
Authentication Password (None is not an option offered)
What are the outgoing server settings?
The receiving email ports are:
IMAP is port 143
IMAP-SSL is port 993
POP is port 110
POP-SSL is port 995
Outgoing ports are...
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.
OK I found another box which was as you described - Use default port settings, and the authentication box was at 'password' but I could change it to 'none', so I have. Do you think this might help?

Then again you might have to put it back, does it send mails without it?
I see blueyonder has pretty frequent problems it seems, next time it can't send check this site...
As you say we'll have to wait and see. But thanks very much for your ideas, and the link. It's certainly not the first time I've had problems and often they leave as mysteriously as they came. At least this time I've tried, with your help.

If it helps I think you can sign up for a Free iCloud IMAP account & then...
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
•Server name: imap.mail.me.com
•SSL Required: Yes
•Port: 993
•Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
•Password: Your iCloud password
SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
•Server name: smtp.mail.me.com

•Port: 587
•SMTP Authentication Required: Yes

Seems to be fine now so thanks again. When it next happens I will probably try changing accounts so thanks for all that info too.
