Unfortunately Final Cut Pro X doens't seem to recognize the (*.MTS) files produced by Panasonic on this camera or on a Lumix ZS 20 move mode. I've tried it throught the camera and inserted the SDXC card into the card slot on my IMac, but still can't get Final Cut Pro X to recognize the files.

Any other ideas other than converting the files with some type converter application??

This camcorder records in several ways, including AVCHD2, mpeg4 iframe, and 3d, at least that seems to be the case from a quick reading of its specs.

If you get the latest update for fcpx, it will handle video shot in 60P. That is 10.0.4

Here is what Apple says it supports, and one version of the 900 seems to be supported.

I think the Apple site is a little behind its own software update, as one advantage of the new update is that it handles 60P.

Maybe I am missing something, but I wonder what would happen if you get the latest update for fcpx, and try your card again. I did find that fcpx now supports my sony dslr at 60P.

Here is a thread with one person saying theycan now use their 900.

Hughmass:

I noted your recommemdation to update to FCP X to version 10.0.4. I gernerally do a software update via the ujpodate process through the Apple Icon which said that my software was up to date. I found the update on the App store and did the update to 10.0.4. Now FCP X finds all the files and imports all the necessarsy files including 1080P 60 fps files. Works like a champ also for the new Panasonic Lumix ZS 20 point and shoot camera which also has the capabilitdy of 1080p 60fps. Thanks for everybodies recommendtions and help!!! A HAPPY CAMPER!

The only camera FCP X sees on my computer is the built -in one used for Photo Booth. etc. I wonder if my download of the 10.0.4 was completly satisfactory. It seems my rendering times are awfully long and I ran into one problem when I could not unsplit the video and audio of a clip. I had to delete the clip and reinseert the clip from the Event Library. Perhaps I should re-download 10.0.4 if that is kosher to do.

I am converting my files to Prores in ClipWrap and editing that codec. Maybe I should be using some other codec to improve performance but I don't know how to do that as I understand to have to convert back to a higher resolution after editing with a lower resolution codec.

I went back to the manual to see if it mentioned iFrame and I could not find anything on that. I set my camera on 1080p AVCHD and auto, or intelligent/auto as they call it.

I do connect my camera to the USB port on the keyboard which has proven reliable when getting the files via ClipWrap. Do you think that could be a problem when trying to bring the files into FCP direct from camera?

Tom, I appreciate your responding to my woes. I was wondering if you could point me to an article that describes the work flow for using optimized formats to improve editing performance.

Using the keyboard USB socket sounds a bit dodgy.

Use one on the computer as Tom suggested.

My Panasonic SD800 is basically the same as yours and I have no problems whatsoever . . . but I keep clear of the keyboard socket! 😉

Simply select "Create optimized media" when importing files and they will be converted to ProRes 422.

Then just edit as normal.
