All of a sudden, I started getting a drop down box wanting my password. This happens over and over. I have had 5 IT professionals try to fix it. I lasted a couple of hours twice and then the dreaded drop down password box appeared again. My web mail works and my Iphone mail works. I have tripled checked with my email provider to be sure I have the correct password. Do I need to reinstall Mac Mail?

Hello, is this MobileMe or .mac I guess?

I think they're slowly nudging people to switch, .mac & MobileMe are going away about June/July, may as well set it up now.

Do not delete the old account yet.

I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.

You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change to & to, no matter what you try to enter.

iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...

On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.

    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:

    Server name:

    SSL Required: Yes

    Port: 993

Username: (use your address from your iCloud account)

    Password: Your iCloud password

    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:

    Server name:

    SSL Required: Yes

    Port: 587

    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes

Username: (use your address from your iCloud account)

    Password: Your iCloud password

Good to hear, thanks for the report Tad!

How can I make it clearer, your not the first to not read it correctly.

    Perhaps all caps?

But thank you very much for the solution!

Thanks, I've added your all caps to my note... & glad I could help!

I ended up paying ATT $50 to get my mac mail fixed in April. Now, one month later, the same problem is happening. Repeated requests for password and constantly kicked off line. My I phone and web mail work fine-it is just the Mac mail that is a problem. If you create this new account IMAP on the Mac, will the Iphone and webmail still work with the original password? I would hate to affect them by setting up a new account on the mac.

    many thanks

My mail was working on iphone and icloud site.

And it continues to work after I followed instructions above.

This is a super frustrating problem....hard to believe something like this can be allowed to go on by apple.

    Good luck.

I was having the same problems- Mac Mail in 10.6.8 stopped working with my address as soon as I switched over from mobileme to icloud.  I followed BDAqua's suggestions about deleting, then recreating my account as an IMAP account (not a mobileme account) and it worked flawlessly.  It even re-imported all my old messages back into Mail sice they were still on the server.  It was fast and easy and bothing was lost.

I'm upset that Apple won't offer even limited iCloud support to those of us running 10.6, but at the very least we can keep these email addresses.

I just went through similar problem. I was trying to set up my verizon Fios email account on a new iMac but every time I entered my password in the account settings under mail, the password would mysteriously get cleared and I'd continuously get prompted to enter my password.

It turned out the problem was with my keychain. You see, when I moved to the new computer, I copied my old keychain over to the new machine - but I made sure to rename it (login_old) so that it would not collide with the new login keychain. I added the old keychain db to the new iMac and that's when mail started acting up. Mail would ask for my old keychain password and my verizon email would lose its settings. The old keychain still had the email passwords for verizon in them. I tried deleting them from the old keychain but that still didn't fix it. Turns out the problem was that the keychain app was using the old keychain as the default keychain. I suppose there was a collision after all - it seems that since the old login keychain db was the default keychain on my old system, it was somehow behaving as the default keychain on the new system. I'm guessing that there is a "default field" in the db and if you copy db's by hand like this - you can cause two to be default at same time. Once I went into keychain access and set the default to "login", I was able to fix all my email problems. The bottom line is that the keychain can also be a source of mysterious email problems. Hope this info is useful to others.

It appears that my solution above did not stick because as soon as I re-add that old keychain db to my ~/Library/Keychains/ folder, the problem returns. Remove the keychain db, and it's fixed. It does not appear to be a problem with the keychain db - it verifies ok. I am left to conclude that this is a bug in Apple's Mail implementation. I plan to file a bug report.

John, please provide a URL for this.   I cant make Google find any reference to that bug report, the only search result is this thread.

    Hi Mark,

Apparently bug reports to Apple are private when submitted through their website:

I've looked but I can see no way to make this ticket public. I've also reviewed their help page and it seems the system is not designed to allow searching for bugs submitted by other users. Bummer.

However, I now see that someone at apple did read the bug report and apparently the file I uploaded with the report did not get received properly so they asked me to resend it. I will do that now.

If you want me to send you a copy of the submitted text, let me know. It's kind of lengthy to repost here though.
