i have an older airport express, 2004, i am using a new macbook pro, 17. how do i tie it in with a new time capsule? i went to utilities and it shows me the airport express with a red #1, and it says use 5.6 to configure. where do i find airport utilities 5.6.
What is your goal for the 802.11g AirPort Express Base Station (AX)? That is do you want to use it to extend the wireless range of the Time Capsule (TC) or just for streaming iTunes and/or share a USB printer?
thanks, i was just trying to extend. so the others could use just the airport express, land i would use the time capsule as the book pro's wifi and the mac mini on the time capsule as well. let all the relatives and such use just the airport express.
Ok, when configuring an extended wireless network with "mixed" 802.11n & 802.11g base stations, your only option will be a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
I've had some problems with the external drive that I was using for Time Machine backups, so I purchased a TimeCapsule. I had my network set-up with a D-Link N router and am trying to get the Timecapsule set up. I've not been successful getting all devices to talk to the Timecapsule, such as a Wireless N Gaming Adapter that is currently in use with my DirectTV box (to get internet access). I also would like to "extend" my network with an Airport Express that I purchased a little over a year ago.
Can I use the AE to extend the network range of the Timecapsule? What is the best way to set this up? In reading the WDS setup it says "WDS is designed for 802.11g, and shouldn’t be used for 802.11n devices" So, I'm thinking that this isn't the best way for my hadware? Is this an option for me?

Yes, either AirPort Express Base Station model can extend the wireless range of the TC. How it is configured will depend on which model. As mentioned to the OP, the 802.11g model can only be configured in a WDS; the newer 802.11n can be configured in an extended network instead.
I have a similar issue. Is it better to have the 802.11n as the relay and the 802.11g as the remote? or does it matter?
