Is the speaker icon in the menu bar grayed out? Option click the speaker icon in the menu bar, what choices do you have under 'Output Device'? Which one is selected? Can you get sound through headphones, i.e. is it just the internal speakers that don't work? Look into the headphone socket, can you see a red light?

What do you do if you don't have any options under "output devices"?
try resetting the Pram and SMC
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Did the resets for Pram and SMC. Problems continues. Under Sound Output it says, "no output devices found" and I cannot unselect the Mute button. Volume icon at the top of the screen is grayed out and the slider doesn't move. Everything else seems to be normal.
Some have reported plugging a set of headphones in and out several times while toggling the volume buttons have helped. Can't hurt to try.
Thank you. Tried it. Problem persists.
Also you can try checking in AudioMIDI Setup to see if the built in output is selected and that the volume is up and mute is not checked.
Nope. Nothing showed up there. also, there are "no output devices" listed under output devices in the System Preferences.
