Also if you go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and hover the mouse pointer over the iPod backup the SN will pop up.

Apparently i didn't back mine up, ever. it's not showing up. now what?

You can also go to iTunes on the syncing computer and go to Help. The depress the Control key and click on the About iTunes. The SN of the iPod will scroll in the About iTunes screen.
