Check this page; http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353 for help in identifying your model.
The Classic has been available since September 2007 and over the years has been made in 80Gb, 120GB and 160GB versions. Check carefully, since the iPod 5th Generation was available in 80Gb as well.
There are pictures and a bit more identification features listed below the table on that page.
Thanks for reply, I guess mine must be Classic ipod 5th generation being 30GB. I hope thats right.
No, if it's a 5th generation, and it's 30GB, that's not a Classic. It's simply known as iPod (5th generation).
There are two very slightly different 30GB iPod (5th generation) models too. Check that list, under 5th generation, and notice the paragraph stating iPod (5th generation Late 2006). In that paragraph, it tells you how to correctly identify the late 2006 version. On a few occassions, it may be necessary for you to know. The most suitable discussion community for that model of iPod is Older iPods.
You should note the other 30GB iPods shown in the list too, the iPod Photo for instance, which first came out in 2004.
Checked the list under 5th generation and could not find the last 3 letters at the end of the serial number.
Mine showing as WEC.
So I'm thinking it is as you said iPod 5th Generation even though the last 3 letters do not fit according to the info shown.
Suppose so. More specifiaclly though;
So unless you realise otherwise, you have an iPod (5th generation), available from October 2005
I found this Technical Specification page.
This might be it.

Yes already seen this page, but my number details are not listed on it. I will just have to accept its 5th Generation and guess the date. Thanking you both for your help.
The difference between the two model numbers:
MA002FB/A = UK
MA002LL/A = US
These are the iPods country of origin.
The info you get off of the Apple site will be slightly different as the Apple web site is based in the US.
Wow BT,
are you a tax inspector or something? 😁
nope, i just have too much much spare time ... 😉
Thank you BT you have nailed it for me. This is the ultimate answer to my question. Glad you have that spare time. Much appreciated.
I have looked at the support link mentioned above, but can't figure out the differences between what people call a "6th generation" or a "7th generation". Model MC297LL and my serial # ends with RX9ZU. It is a 160. Is there even SUCH A THING as a 7th generation?
Please can you tell me how to find out which generation Classic ipod I have?
