dvd movie won't play on my Mac leopard?

First time problem with video dvd's. Same format as other dvd's. What if anything missing?

Nothing happens. disc goes in, comes out one minute later. no error message or prompt.

Because of prior dvd problems, I've got the dvd application on my desktop every time I start my computer. This is not on my preferred list when opening. How can I stop this?
