Connecting mac clients via SMB only?

We have to change our Mac Pros, 10.6 to connect to our Mac server running 10.5 to SMB only and not AFP.

Is this going to be OK? I have feeling that we are going to have problems. We have to connect via SMB to our mac file server to use Esko Artwork's Automation Engine software running on a Windows 2008 server box that has our Mac file server as Mapped Network Drives.

If anyone can pass along any information about problems that I might run into it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
