Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 Standard Toolbar not staying visible
This workaround did the trick for me:
- Quit Word
- In the Finder's menu bar, select Go > Go to folder and type: ~/Library/Preferences/
- Locate the preference file com.microsoft.Word.plist
- Option drag it to the desktop (this will create a copy to fall back on)
- Open the original in a text editor
- Change the value of Show_HIToolbar from <false/> to <true/> (around line 364) , save the file and test. (If it doesn't work, restore the original.)

As someone also mentioned a new update to Office for Mac 2011 is now available (14.2.0)
which may or may not address this issue.
