I have a 2011 Macbook Air using a Thunderbolt cable and a 2010 iMac - and the thunderbolt cable does not seem to work to make the iMac funciton as an external display. Does anyone know if there is a workaround for this?

Which size iMac? Only the 27" model supports external DisplayPort input.

So iMac as a external monitor only applicable for the 27" inch version? I just bough the cable to connect my 21" iMac to MacBook Air 😟
