Why are the Ascending and Descending options greyed out for Table sorting?

Why are the Ascending and Descending options greyed out for Table sorting?

After I have entered data into my table, I cannot sort it using the 'Ascending/Descending' options in the Column or row Header, as they are greyed out.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Yup, just found the answer in another post. Can't sort on merged cells. Now I know:)
