Open up your Applications folder ... Create new folder and put into that folder the FCPX app. The basic point is you cannot have FCPX and FCP 7 on the dock. So if you seperate them this way it means you can keep which ever one you use most frequently on the dock. I Keep the FCP 7 one there. This works as it is the set up I have .. I was not a fan of FCPX but to future proff my skills I bought it and use it occasionally to learn on.
Jim
Thanks Jim though this doesn't seem to work for me.
I have FCP X in the dock as this is the one I have to get used to and FCP 7 is in it's original folder in Applications/ FCP Studio/ FCP. FCP X is in Aplications.
When I double click the FCP 7 logo it shows the upload initially but then stops and disappears with
no error message.
If I double click an XML file the same thing happens.

You need to open Motion 4 and then close it again. After that, FCP 7 will work as usual.
Hi Nick,
I tried this and it didn't work. FCP started to open and then closed before it completed...
This is exactly how my FCP files are now and it still doesn't work.
I deleted some FCP pref ages ago and can only find RegFinalCutStudio.plist
It is possible to have both in the dock…just not open at the same time.
When you download X, all the FCS apps will be relocated to a folder as Jim shows. After downloading, you need to do as Nick said and that is to open Motion 4 first. The steps are descibedhere. (Link is also under helpful resources at the top of the FCX discussion forum.) So try starting the install again from the beginning, following their recommendations and you should be good to go.
Russ
Thanks for the link Russ.
I tried the re-allowing of permissions for FCP 7 and this didn't work.
Am I able to totally delete and remove FCP X and start again going through the instructions from the link
or will it be like a new purchase?
Sorry for my ignorance, I'm sure I can download it again without penalty but I would rather confirm before
I attempt this.
Many thanks to all respondants for your time
Steve
If it were me I'd start completely over, moving FCX to the trash…then a new download and install that follow the steps outlined in the Apple best practices doc. You shouldn't get charged for the reinstall.
Good luck.
Russ
Hi Russ,
I've tried all 3 of the instructions from the link you sent me. So I've uninstalled FCP X and Motion 3 times and re-downloaded it 3 times and the same thing happens with FCP 7.
It boots up, right up until the part when the windows open on screen and then closes without leaving an error message.
FCP X works fine... Unfortunately I have loads of projects on 7 that I need to complete before an(almost) complete transfer to X.
Anny more ideas would be gratefully received
Regards
Steve
It's unclear (to me) what you've done with respect to preferences. Why don't you download Digitla Rebellion's Preference Manager and trash them with that tool.
What OS are you running and have you run Software Updates?
If you followed the instructions on installing FCX on the same disk partition as FCP 7, they should coexist perfectly fine.
