false message hard drive full 10.5

I have often a pop up message : your hard drive is full. If I am looking on my HD information there is written 0 mg remaining . If I restart the computer, I can read 51 G. Few minutes after the pop up come on again and it's like if the HD lost 51G of space ! Some time remaining space is changing when I am reading on the screen. I rebuilded the volume, used Disk utility for permissions, I tested the Hard drive ....

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8), WD 500 G Black, 4G ram

Hello,

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

I think you should get Applejack...

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...

applejack AUTO

Then let it do all 6 of it's things.

At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.

The 6 things it does are...

Correct any Disk problems.

Repair Permissions.

Clear out Cache Files.

Repair/check several plist files.

Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

Trash old Log files.

First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)

Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

Just sits there occupying very little space & never interfering, unless you need to invoke it in Single User Mode.

Are you using File Vault? If so, look at

I used Applejack before no help. But it's a good thikk to know and use. Thank you for your reply. I read in 2008's blog about a bug with utorrent. I deinstalled all torrent. I will see.

I never use File Vault. I tried applejack, I deinstalled Utorrent. A bit a pace for one or two days. For one day, I had the error message : your HD is full but with out change in my capacity's HD. Since one or two days, I had the message and the problem : zero meg. I rebot the computer and it's ok for some hours.

The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem. 😟

I have tested memory with techtool 5.06 one hour and every parameters was perfects. What next ? I am writing a paper and the computer refused to save my work ! I will try to swap memory.

I have a La Cie external HD FW 800 but it's impossible to save when capacity is zero. It's like to dress up in a tiny closet !? Of course I have asked to time machine to do it work. Suprise after back up HD show 61G free !

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup).

Can you Save while in Safe Mode?

Does it ever report Disk Full in Safe Mode?

Hi,

thank you for your reply. I could not save on any volume if the HD remaining capacity is zero but if he number change I could. I have not used safe mode since OS 9 it was very usfull at this time. I have booted on safe mode. I will watch what happen

my cumputer is in save mode sine one day and there is no problem with HD capacity, HD have 68,53 G free.The fans blow often and airport don't work. What's next ?

Right now I'm suspecting the LaCie drive is drawing just a bit too much power, does it have an A/C adapter plugged into it?

I don't plug all the time my external drives, the La CIe is a big two hd raid model with power supply and three ways power supply : on, auto and off. Since you told me to boot up without extension every think goes well. The computer is satble, no more capacity issue. Of course, I miss sound, may be wif, but it's so simple.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

/Library/LaunchDaemons
