Obviously the problem still exist and Apple hasn't done much to fix it. Thanks for everyone's tips. I guess as long as you save the file thru the icon at the bottom of the page instead of clicking "File" the pdf file would save properly.

I have witnessed an evolution, or different iterations of problems as major components are updated. For example, deleteing those two Adobe files has worked great for me (muiltiple times). Now, I have this periodic pattern of pdf articles not loading and rendering properly in Preview. But it often doesn't display this problem. Sometimes, just reloading the same pdf magically results in a clean Preview pdf file. Other times, the problem persists, and I have to manually download the pdf file (assuming the web site allows me to), and open directly into Acrobat Pro XI. It's very odd and haphazard as these things go. (MBA 2013, 10.9.2, everthing current.).

    No. Firefox doesn't work, either.

I even created an userid on this forum just so I could thank you sacmacguy!  That saved me hours and hours of time.  Thank you so much.

    Brilliant Solution. Worked perfectly

Why doesn't Apple sort this sort of thing out?
