Although it is not obvious or intuitive, press the little arrow thingee to the right of Slideshow on the top right of the screen.
Now, select the photos you wish to delete.
Then press the red Delete button on the left top of your screen.
That's it.....
So I tried but the delete button does not let me do anything. I can share or copy the pictures but not delete 😟

You have the delete the pictures the way they were imported. If from your computer, you have to connect to your computer and manage photos via iTunes sync.
that worked thank you!
Good. Glad to help.....
how do i access photos i itunes?
Do you mean to manage what gets sync'd? If so, then it is under the Photos tab on the Device Profile screens that display when you connect your device to the computer.
If you mean the actual photos, then they would be in iPhoto on a Mac, or in the "My Photos" folder on a PC (or wherever you imported them to).

windows7 device profile does not have itunes option at plug in
The Device Profile screen are in iTunes....when you plug your device in and click on it in iTunes, they show up on the right. If you are having issues with iTunes recognizing your device, see this support article:

I do not see the photos tab in iTunes when I sync my iPad to my MacBook. I am not able to change sync settings for photos. What could be the problem?
What tabs do you see in the Device Profile screens in iTunes when you select your device after plugging it into your computer?
Cheers,
GB
I see the following tabs - summary, info, apps, music, videos, books, podcasts etc. all except photos!
Check your window size. If it is too large, the Photos tab will be off to the right and you won't be able to see it. Resize your window to make it smaller or go to full screen.

Thanks Gail. Found your answer in my email. I changed the iTunes window to full screen and saw the photos tab. What stupidity on my part :-). Problem solved.
