2 GB is the specified minimum however most people will recommend at least 4. I suspect you will not be pleased with Lion's performance with only 2 GB.

OS X Lion system requirements

To use Lion, make sure your computer has the following:

  • An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
  • Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended); you can install without Mac OS X v10.6 by using an OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, available on the Apple Online Store
  • 7 GB of available disk space
  • 2 GB of RAM

If your Mac does not meet these requirements, you will need to upgrade your Mac before installing Lion.

For more information, see OS X Lion - Technical Specifications.

Your iMac most likely has 2 x 512 MB; you will need to remove these and add 2 x 1 GB for a total of 2 GB; unless we know the model identifier of your Mac, we don't know if you can have more. Click on the apple and then About this mac and then more info: look at the hardware and post what it says on the right; there should be something like 8,2 or 9,1 for identifier.

You can't upgrade the computer you have (for Lion)- you can increase the RAM to 2 GB (2 x 1 GB module - not just one 1 GB module, won't work - you need 1 GB module in each slot) and the two should be purchased as a "kit" meaning they'll be exactly the same.

You can also run Snow Leopard on it - it's an excellent OS; however, any computer with more memory would be better.

So, you can buy a new one which will already have Lion installed (but no install disks) or a used or refurbished one that still has Snow Leopard (with install disks) and you can upgrade it to Lion.

Snow Leopard should run fine:

Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard system requirements

To install Snow Leopard for the first time, you must have a Mac with:

  • An Intel processor
  • An internal or external DVD drive, or DVD or CD Sharing
  • At least 1 GB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended)
  • A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
  • At least 5 GB of disk space available, or 7 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools

For more information, see the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Installation and Setup Guide.

Unfortunately iCloud needs Lion 😟

At six years the Core Duo is getting a bit dated. With incessant website changes constantly placing greater demands on hardware, your iMac will have a hard time keeping up.
