i hate it when i can watch the news on site because of silverlight. is it save to download , i hate microsoft software

I getting a litlle frustrated , there are more sites in holland if you want to watch the news live , they all are demanding to dowload microsoft silverlight.

I made a change from Microsoft to Apple because i was fet up with the Microsoft Company and his exe files because the system from Microsoft is not running as smooth as an Apple Lion. I had always problems with microsoft. And at this moment if you want to see live stream form dutch news sites they all demand silverlight for running is there a other option for this. or is it save to download a silverlight on the mac mini.
