Q: Which Model Identifier do I have?

I'm trying to figure out which Model of Mac I have so I can install more RAM, but the chart given is conflicting. I have a 17" Macbook Pro that I bought from BestBuy with Model Identifier "MacBookPro6,2" … but I look on this chart here, and the only 6,2 is a 15" Model. I don't get it. For the most part, the "MacBookPro6,1" defines my hardware I guess, but I'm concerned as to why there is no 6,2 17" on the chart when clearly I own one.

Go to the Apple logo on the top left of your screen

Select About This Mac and then More Info to see the hardware details of your MBP

You can also go to the Crucial website and run their Memory Advisor Tool to identify suitable memory for your model.

The proper memory specifications for your mid 2010 MBP are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.

The maximum memory that this model will support is 8GB.

Charts can be wrong. Have you measured your MBP? (no insult intended)

Yes, I measured my MBP. I did specifically buy the 17" and know it's a 17" because I can't find any leather messenger bags that can accomodate it. They're all made for 15". ... and clearly I also used a measuring tape to confirm this.

Anyway, I'm just concerned that my "About this Mac" says that it's a 6'2, when everything specifically says a 6,2 is a 15" and the 6'1 is 17" Do you have any idea why it would say this? Do you think they could have possibly installed the wrong software to accomodate 15" specifications?

You have a 15" MacBook Pro, there was never a 2.4GHz processor for the 17" MacBook Pro, Model Identifier 6,1.

The issue here is not whether or not I have a 15" MBP or not. I do not have a 15". I specifically BOUGHT a 17"... because I in fact PAID for a 17". The box says 17"... the ruler says 17"... I cannot find things to fit it BECAUSE it's 17".

The issue is WHY MY 17" MBP SAYS IT'S 15"...

You have incorrectly measured your screen. The screen is measured using the area where the pixels reside NOT the outside area odf the bezel;

Measure the width of the machine:

It will measure 14.35"

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, guess what? It's most likely a duck. Go to an Apple store & they will confirm you have a 15" MacBook Pro.

Your MacBook Pro does NOT say it is 17". You do. I think you misunderstood what you were purchasing. Looking on the packaging the computer arrived in.
