Q: Editing with different timebases, frame rates

Shooting with 2 different cameras, I have different timebases in one project.

1. My Canon Vixia HDV footage, so it's a 29.97 timebase. ( interlaced)

2. Footage from my HVX200 captured from the Fire-store ( Non PN mode) so, it's 59.94 editing timebase.

AND: I recently purchased P2 card which I want to begin to use wiill be at 23.98, but maybe I should hold off on using?

I am mixing and matching all of the different footage into the multiple timelines I am using for this project. 80% of footage is from the Fire-store captured with the HVX200.

I would suppose putting different clips from the above mentioned scenarios onto one timeline would not give me "best performance" especially DVD playback?

I have video from the Canon 29.97 interlaced frames and the HVX200 "24 frames over 60", with 59.94 timebase.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.3), editing with FCS 2.

Can Cinema Tools take out the dropdown from the 59.94 footage, to either the desirable 24 fps, or to match the Canon Vixia 29.97 footage?

OR rather,  should I just convert the 29.97 fps from the Canon VIXIA to match the Fire-store footage?

    What should you do?

Make sure all the cameras are the same and record the same codec /frame rate/ frame size. Since you are not going there, pick one (usually the camera that will generate the most amount of usable material) and match everything to that codec/ frame rate/ image size.

Or, since everything is going to DVD, convert it all to ProRes 720x480 16:9 anamorphic and use that for the sequence settings.

    Or not.

Thanks for your suggestion. I am not sure how I go about matching everything else to the HVX200 footage or even if it can be done in Compressor.

This is a great article about the diasters that can happen when transferrring FCP, HD footage to DVD. It is way over my head, regarding how to fix the different editing timebase situation.

Thanks again. I will play around with Compressor.
