before someone tells me to bang my head against table, i want to say that i know the HUGE difference between sample format like AIFF and MIDI.

if it is widely known or not (most probably not), AIFF contains MID data chunks and that gives me a hope that it is possible to convert AFF to MIDI, if AIFF actually contains the MIDI data. best would be if someone knew if it is possible with afconvert (BSD/Mac) built-in tool. if not, then let's discuss the geekery of extracting the MIDI out of AIFF for free 😉 or will i have to debug garageband to see what it i sdoing while loading AIFF and then converting it to MIDI?

you're right, therefore the program should check IF there's a MIDI data chunk and respond appropriately. the question is how to check it, since there's no file header announcing "here be MIDI". all in all, it could go way back to some byte stream and FFT telling wha the itch is and mapping it to notes and then to MIDI. but experiencing garageband, there's already code that is doing it without all of this complexity?
