How do iCal banners work?

I use my monthly calendar almost exclusively. I prefer my events have a colored banner, but iCal doesn't always provide that. I have some entries that are bannered, but too many have simply a colored dot in front of them. I can't recall how I got some to be bannered while others did not. Sometimes I go to the weekly calendar and enter events there to get a more accurate time slot. That way, events show up in the order I want on the monthly. I don't know if doing so results in a bannered entry in the monthly.

What I'm asking is how to get all events in the monthly, bannered. And, is that even possible?

Thanks, Ferd, for that. I got your answer, which I don't like, but as Johnny Cash sang, "I don't like it, but I guess things happen that way." : ) Tip re: showing times is good. I imagine most people go w/ the daily or weekly calendars, while I, retired, have a much less crowded schedule. I know you can't answer this, but I don't understand the necessity to divide all-day events from time events. At any rate, thanks.
