Ipod classic unknown device error

All of a sudden I am getting an "Unknown device" error when I connect my ipod to my pc. I have tried 3 different PCs using Windows 7 and XP and am getting the same issue on all of them. The iPod is getting a charge but won't connect with iTunes. It started after I upgraded to 10.6.1. Anyone have any ideas on what is going on?

Some clarification needed.

Does Windows Explorer give a drive ID to the iPod device like E: or F:?

Can you put your iPod in Disk Mode and connect it to Windows, open iTunes and Restore the iPod, (to update or fix the iPod software), which maybe corrupted.
