Aug 19, 2012 3:51 PM in response to JonnyITokyoby fith,^That is not even reliable for me.
I have VMWare installed, but have not used it in weeks and I have been having this problem increasingly often.
Could even the VMWare background helper process affect it?
I've had my Air for about a year and don't recall it ever happening before Mountain Lion. Hopefully an update (to ML or VMW) will take care of this soon.

Aug 19, 2012 8:05 PM in response to fithby dshannon4296,I downloaded the latest version of VMware Fusion and no help. I am going to check into the background process. Also wondering if I might just have a hardware problem.

Aug 27, 2012 8:21 PM in response to JonnyITokyoby John C Chamberlin,I am experiencing this same issue. However, unlike other posters in this thread, I'm not running VMWare or any virtualization software.

Aug 27, 2012 10:04 PM in response to John C Chamberlinby JonnyITokyo,OP here.
I haven't seen this issue for many months now. I'd almost say it's gone.
I did uncheck all that USB support in the VM and since the problem seems to be gone. That might have been the culprit although it might just have been something else. Maybe one of those official OS X updates. And oh, I'm running Mountain Lion these days as well - was running Lion back then.

Sep 4, 2012 11:31 PM in response to JonnyITokyoby jpacs2007,Would like to add that I'm also experiencing this issue. Happended only after upgrading to Mountain Lion on my 2011 MBA. Also have to force shutdown every time it happens and it still happens, quite often. I do not have virtualization apps.
Already updated to 10.8.1 and reset SMC. No change.
Really hope it's just a software issue.

Sep 17, 2012 6:49 PM in response to jpacs2007by aRock10,I have the same issue as jpacs2007. I don't VMWare installed. I did bring it to the genious bar. They couldn't pinpoint the cause but suggested reinstalling the OS via restart and holding Apple-R. I have yet to try it because it takes around an hour or so but I plan to this weekend. I'll post the outcome.

Sep 19, 2012 5:59 PM in response to aRock10by indigoblue73,This is also happening to me and only started happening when I upgraded to Mountain Lion (how I really wish I never bothered).
I can reproduce this 100% of the time now as everytime the computer goes into sleep and then wakes the trackpad and keyboard are completely frozen (bar the power button which you can press and hold but not press and select using Enter etc.).
I've rebuilt twice using Mountain Lion once restoring all my files from my timecapsule backup and once just a complete vanilla installation with no additional software. Both cases I still have the issue.
I have noticed however that you can plug a USB mouse in and it will work proving that it's just the internal input devices affected by this issue.
I've been systematically trying to pinpoint the service / process which maybe causing this but to no avail as yet... I will keep on it.
It only seems to be later machines affected also as I have an older MacBook Pro & 2010 iMac i7 which have both been fine... weird!
I like everyone else with this issue (and it seems to be really really common) have been waiting for an update / patch from Apple to no avail... It really is **** poor that Apple use the users as Q&A subjects for their software.

Sep 19, 2012 9:46 PM in response to indigoblue73by aRock10,Thanks for saving me the trouble of reinstalling.
I do want to add, when my MBAir is connected to my Thunderbolt Display and woken it works beautifully whether the lid is closed or not.
Hope something comes soon.

Sep 20, 2012 12:34 AM in response to aRock10by Costyn,It's strange, I've not had the problem any more recently. I'm still using Lion. Even when leaving VirtualBox running there haven't been any problems with it freezing.
Hope you guys get it sorted soon.

Sep 23, 2012 4:16 AM in response to indigoblue73by Macaddict43,I have a similar problem; but my mac air does not recover when I reboot! Basically, my keyboard and trackpad are frozen, but computer can work with an external Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I brought it to my local apple shop and to a genius bar but no help given! finally, a work colleague installed snow leopard. The keyboard worked for a brief period before it stopped again. We reinstalled and reset the PRam. The computer worked for a few weeks and now it has just reverted! No keyboard, no trackpad, no suggestions. My local apple shop offer no help. This is very frustrating.

Oct 5, 2012 5:52 PM in response to JonnyITokyoby Leonardo Cohen,I am having similar issue. My brand new Mac Book Air 13" mid-2012 keyboard and trackpad, out of the blue, just stop working..... sometimes they start working again after a few seconds or minutes, sometines never.... I have a normal stock Mountain Lion, recently updated to 10.8.2 but problem was happening since 10.8
External Blutooth mouse works and the only solution is to restar or shutdown and turn computer on.
Quite depressing and useless....will try to follow some advice here and post later on
Thanks!

Oct 15, 2012 7:56 PM in response to JonnyITokyoby z-hane,I had the same problem with 10.7.5. So I wiped the hard drive and installed 10.8.2 to see if some other applications are causing this and no luck. It still happens. So I took it to Genius bar and they did not do anything because problem cannot be reproduced, as usual. I have been Wintel user all my life and just bought this MBA to see why people are crazy about apple products. Now it seems to me it is just pretty product I cannot use reliablly. Sorry Apple.

Oct 16, 2012 3:24 AM in response to z-haneby indigoblue73,This issue actually went away for me in 10.8.1 and then stupidly I thought it would be a good idea to update to 10.8.2!! The issue is now back but the battery problem seems to have gone away (i.e. I can put the MBA to sleep on 100% and wake it up 12 hours later to find only 1% of the battery depleted).
Talking of which, using Coconut Batter App, my MBA battery is now only holding 88% of its original charge. It's only 11 months old and I fully discharge it every time I use it before recharging (even though this isn't really necessary anymore!!).
BTW, the MBA doesn't freeze after sleep, only the keyboard and mouse stop working. If you plug in USB items they will work fine (a good way to produce a proper reboot)... It must be a driver / service issue.

Oct 19, 2012 4:25 PM in response to z-haneby z-hane,OK, I'm not sure what fixed my KB/Touchpad problem. I had the exact same problem as Leonardo Cohen, above post.
I did two things at night on 10/16/2012.
1. reset PRAM by holding keys for three reboots then boot up as normal
2. and checked Software update and found out that there was official removing Java from Apple software update. So I did. And since then my MBA is functioning as it should. Knock on wood, this fixes the problem.
